MAN IS WOLF TO MAN.

WHO? Everybody! Including fourth wall visitors.
WHAT? End of the line.
WHEN? The end of an era and dawn of a new one.
ANYTHING ELSE? Please warn for anything besides physical violence and move to a personal journal if it's beyond PG-13.

MONARCHY IN CHAINS;
THANKS FOR EVERYTHING, YOU INGRATES.

WAKE UP FROM THE WORLD STAGE.

With Fafnir defeated, citizens rise from their beds. No one remembers the incident...unless they have a BCE. While there's a great deal of confusion about certain circumstances—like those who fell asleep in crashed cars—most people move on and go forward with their day. Maybe a bit of déjà vu persists, but that's the extent of it for the average citizen. Even the accidents are chalked up to, more than anything else, a string of freak accidents. Reports are filed and investigations launched, but they're one event of many.

For you? Those memories are yours. Forever. What will you do with them?

WE BUILT THIS CITY ON CHAOS.

If a revolt isn't revolting, it isn't working. There's violence in the streets—everywhere. The chaos isn't confined to just the lower districts, to the horror of the rich. Crowds with molotovs, stolen weapons, anything they can find, rampage through every district. Some seek to find corrupt politicians and bring them to swift, gruesome justice. Some hold the rich ransom for better pay, better access to food. Some just rob everything that isn't nailed down.

A contingent of rioters break into the Pyramid District and kill entire swaths of the royal family.

Be careful you don't get caught on the wrong side of these mobs...or try to help out! Some of the rioters certainly bill the violence as fun, after all.

On top of chaos, something strange happens. Someone hacked the main grid of the city and every government-sanctioned telescreen and soundcaster is playing a bevy of classical and operatic music...with some twists. As fire and blood overtake the city, music swells in the night.

A revolution without dancing isn't a revolution worth having.

BEAUTIFUL AND TERRIBLE AS THE DAWN.

Meanwhile, fuel is added to the fire. Someone by the handle @WARSONG leaks an important file to the wider net. It details how several prominent politicians are funding experimentation on cloning and genetic "improvement" facilities to make people more susceptible to brainwashing, suggestion, and propaganda. The people are outraged and demand an answer.

But no answer comes. Politicians scramble for a scapegoat, so they call for the king, but the king isn't...right. His mind seems scrambled, completely out of bounds, and he's deemed unfit to rule. The next in line is a cousin, but she dies in a riot, and then her recently deceased brother. The list goes on and on, until the crown is placed upon the head of a young girl, traditionally far from the throne. She never would have been a contender for the throne, if not for this chaos. Luckily, she was born five seconds earlier than her twin.

Ueli Ansath Sherel takes the imperial name Ansath Ueli Tal-Xol, first of her name, Queen of Lemuria and Empress of the Tranquil Empire. She promises stability, but few hear her over the roar of the riot. She immediately declares martial law anyway, so at least her voice is felt. The streets are flooded with the military, who rapidly pull back from the Crosslands.

Just, if you're in Lemuria, watch out. You might get shot by something very expensive.

THE CITY OF PEACE.

With the military gone to handle rioting Lemurians, the people of the Crosslands set up camp, hunkering down for when, they think, the military will return. They have some serious weaponry on their side; most notably, two dragons have joined their cause. One is Fafnir, who understands the damage he's done and wants to make amends; the other is Jörmungandr, persuaded by Fafnir to join the cause and that the Crosslands are their better allies, after a narrow scrape with what he believes were Lemurian warriors.

So while the Crosslands aren't exactly peaceful, they're not the riotous mass of neighboring Lemuria. It won't take long to escape to them, should you so choose. This is especially true for the magical and mythological; once tolerated in Lemuria, they are now outright loathed. Survivors flee to the Crosslands, where the hulking masses of two dragons flank the sky. And the Crosslanders know an advantage when they see one, welcoming refugees—myths especially—with the understanding they'll stand and fight when the Lemurian army returns.

If you don't agree, they'll try to chase you out however they can. The magic now on their side is nothing short of stunning.

Among the escaping masses is...Viero. His recent brush with death and failure at political up-jumping has made him denounce his ties with the military of Lemuria. He flees to the Crosslands, where he claims he's reformed and helps the people build up their defenses. He's quickly becoming an influential political entity, with his well-made speeches and genuine military knowledge aiding his base. He rallies people to the cause, and promises to defend the Crosslands from the corruption of Lemurian politics, which he now denounces.

It looks like the future of the Tranquil Empire won't be in time travel or in conquest, but in war with the Crosslands, led by the disgraced Viero. He doesn't have the resources to become a monster, but neither does Lemuria's new empress. Not yet, anyway. Not like the Regency.

And, more importantly, your time here is drawing to a close.

BUT YOU CAN'T GO HOME AGAIN.

Just as the chaos and violence reaches a fever pitch, you receive a ping on your BCE.
@CMDR | @ALL

Soldiers, you've resurrected me. I appreciate the gesture, but my time is at an end. You have destroyed what will one day be the Regency, and so I shall never be born. Every moment you have given me of life is a gift for which I cannot repay. Thank you.

Onto other matters.

You have also stopped the invention of the BCEs. This is good; it means time travel will not come to be abused as it shall be in the future. But it also means your BCEs will soon start malfunctioning. Promises we may have made you about returning home or escaping are beginning to fade. We have limited time. You have limited time.

There are only so many time-jumps we can make. Not everyone can return home. Some will have to stay. It will be easier on our weakening technology to transport people in groups, as well; if you have a friend with a homeworld you would rather return to than your own, I will allow it. While it is against COST policy, soon, COST will never have existed. We will break protocol for now.

Please make your decisions quickly. I do not know how much time we have. As such, please relate all inquiries to @ASHOLE and @STARBOY; I have unfinished business that must be completed before the end of things.

Goodbye, my fellow soldiers.
Any messages sent to Grothia will bounce back.

As for you? It's time to go. But where will you go, and with who? An app opens on your BCE that shows how many slots there are to leave and how many there are to stay. Every extra journey takes resources, but sending two at once takes far fewer and is encouraged.

Whatever you choose, it's a one-way trip.

[OOCly, we're handwaving this, so we're not going to make you calculate it out. There just aren't enough slots for everyone, so it's up to your character to make one last jump or stay to fight in this war between Lemuria and the Crosslands. Basically, choose whatever you think is most IC or poignant or the best ending for your character in this game.]

If I lose, that's simple. I die, and Fiore does not gain her own wish. [There's a pause, then a small smile.] We're well matched. The original wish I had was selfish, and she considers hers much the same. She is wheelchair bound, and would like to fix that without giving up any other part of her mage related life.

[Chiron's not about to lie, and he's made his peace with death long ago.]

Fiore's death is...a possibility, but we hope not one that will come to pass. You go into this competition with that knowledge.

[personal profile] doublejumps 2018-11-11 08:40 pm (UTC)(link)
[ A selfish wish? Maybe so, but Genji had a similar one, so it's not as if he can judge. He'd had to pay a price to get his body back and walk again, but he'd barely given it a second thought. To be turned into a killing machine for his own desires could hardly be applauded, and it's something he hopes to make up for now, if only in small ways. ]

You said you had an original wish? Does that mean that at one point you were in her position?

[ The stakes are all so high, but Chiron speaks of it like he's gone through it quite a few times. What a strange existence, to be summoned over and over to carry out the will of others. It seems kind of sad, thinking about it that way, but Chiron doesn't seem bitter in the slightest. ]
horsepowered: (x6. He smile)

[personal profile] horsepowered 2018-11-12 01:32 am (UTC)(link)
Oh er...no, I've just explained badly. Both the Master and Servant are granted a wish each.

[He smiles, embarrassed, but he may as well continue to be truthful in this moment.]

I had originally intended to regain my immortality, as it was the only thing I truly had from my parents. But after all of this I...I am content with my death and do not believe the wish worthwhile.
doublejumps: (pic#11884502)

[personal profile] doublejumps 2018-11-12 09:31 pm (UTC)(link)
[ Content with his death? That doesn't sound right at all. Genji can understand how an immortal being might eventually tire of living, but is Chiron truly at that point? ]

If you don't mind me asking... how did you lose your immortality in the first place?

[ It doesn't seem like something that would happen by chance, judging from the little that Genji knows of mythology. ]
horsepowered: (x4. Serious face)

[personal profile] horsepowered 2018-11-12 11:27 pm (UTC)(link)
Ah. Well...[Chiron laughs, not uneasily, but in a sort of embarrassed way.] I was struck with a poison arrow. Because I couldn't die, I was cursed with unbearable agony. So between the two options, I went with the one that promised freedom.
doublejumps: (pic#11884484)

[personal profile] doublejumps 2018-11-20 03:18 am (UTC)(link)
[ The memories are fuzzy, but Genji can still recall how it had felt when he'd been poisoned back in the arena. It had claimed his life, so he can't entirely relate to what Chiron is saying, but chronic pain is no stranger to him. ]

I see... [ He bows his head and lets out a sigh. It doesn't seem right that someone as good as Chiron would be made to suffer so much. ] That sounds horrific, Chiron. I can't blame you for making that choice.

But I don't think there's anything wrong with wanting to reclaim what you lost, if it's what you associate with your parents.

[ Even demigods had parents, didn't they? It's a strange thought. ]
horsepowered: (x6. He smile)

[personal profile] horsepowered 2018-11-20 01:17 pm (UTC)(link)
No, I don't suppose there is. But if I have the wisdom to know that the decision to reclaim that is not in my best interest either, then I can move onto finding something better, and perhaps more helpful beyond just my own desires.

[Chiron looks at peace with all he has just said, that much is not up for debate. Genji's a good person to talk to about these things, that much has been proven true time and again.]

But that's where I stand.
doublejumps: (pic#12151628)

[personal profile] doublejumps 2018-11-24 05:18 pm (UTC)(link)
[ In a way, Chiron actually reminds Genji of Zenyatta. They have a similar sense of calm about them, and also seem to spread wisdom without even trying. Or that's how it feels to Genji, anyway.

He reaches out to grip Chiron's shoulder, nodding firmly. ]
It is a shame we must part here. I feel as if I still have much to learn from you. [ Which does make some kind of sense, since Chiron had been a teacher for so many years. ]

But I suppose I owe you a story, now.
horsepowered: (x6. He smile)

[personal profile] horsepowered 2018-11-25 01:50 am (UTC)(link)
[Chiron can only smile at that assessment. Because maybe it's true, but there's a deeper sentiment:] Likely. And the same is true in reverse. I've never been so fortunate to fight along with an ally that I fell into such an easy step with. There's a lifetime of new things to understand from that alone.

[Genji's going to get another hug before all's said and done.]

You do, yes.
doublejumps: (pic#12151632)

[personal profile] doublejumps 2018-11-28 09:50 pm (UTC)(link)
[ Genji will hardly say no to another hug, being nowhere near as emotionally constipated as his brother. Though again, there's a time when he wouldn't have been able to stand a show of physical affection, and that's what Chiron wishes to know about.

He's quiet for a while, focusing on the sound of the wind through the trees and the smell of smoke in the air. He lets out a long breath and then nods, ready to start his tale. ]

I grew up in a family that was very well-off, very well-established, but there were strict rules. More than that, they were, all appearances aside, essentially gangsters. [ Rich and well-to-do gangsters, but gangsters all the same. ] Once I understood what was expected of me as heir, I wanted nothing to do with it, but they wouldn't let me go so easily.
horsepowered: (Default)

[personal profile] horsepowered 2018-11-28 10:55 pm (UTC)(link)
[Chiron listens. Not just to Genji's words, but to the world around them. This is quiet, a peace after something long fought for. Not many men live to see it, few more can so easily speak of things further past and with greater emotional weight than the thing they've gone through.

Gangsters were not a thing of the Greeks. But to refuse a family's calling, oh, well that he knows.]

Doubtlessly there were plans laid well before you even were walking. [He's listening. And he can only guess what it would be like to grow in such a place.]
doublejumps: (pic#12151629)

[personal profile] doublejumps 2018-11-30 05:19 am (UTC)(link)
[ It's not as if all of Genji's childhood had been terrible. He still has many memories that he cherishes, but those can't make up for all of the strife that he'd had to live through as well. But he's learned how to take the bad with the good, as it's not like he has any other choice.

There is something peaceful about them sitting here talking in the aftermath of the fight, with the sun slowly dipping into twilight. Even if the topics of conversation aren't quite so pleasant. ]

Yes, naturally. And when they decided that I need to be brought back into the fold, they assigned my older brother to the task. When I refused, he did what he'd been ordered to do, and attacked me. [ Even now, Genji can't help the way that his body tenses and his hands ball into fists when he talks about that fateful day. ] It wasn't some friendly spar between siblings. I was never the same after that -- he thought he'd killed me, but I was a bit luckier than that.
horsepowered: (Default)

[personal profile] horsepowered 2018-11-30 01:18 pm (UTC)(link)
...That is the kind of tradgey that is very familiar to many of my own students.

[Chiron says it with all the empathy in the world. Siblings fighting, family demands, he knows in his bones what that's like to experience. The world of the Greeks had so many demands.

He reaches out, takes one of Genji's own balled up fists into his hand. They're friends. He feels that this is an acceptable gesture.]

What happened afterwards?
doublejumps: (pic#12192136)

[personal profile] doublejumps 2018-12-04 04:33 am (UTC)(link)
[ Genji doesn't like to hear that it was common for this to happen to people in Chiron's world, but he isn't entirely surprised either. Blood ties can make things become ugly so quickly, which is unfortunate when family is supposed to mean something.

He doesn't mind when Chiron grabs his hand, instead loosening his fist so that he can grip back. While he can't feel Chiron's warmth, just the pressure is a help. ]

Overwatch found me, and with their advanced medical and prosthetics teams, they were able to fix me into an approximation of how I am now. It was a rougher design at first that was perfected over time, but given that I shouldn't have made it in the first place, I can be nothing but grateful now.

[ There's a pause, and then Genji laughs at himself. ]

You don't even know what Overwatch is, do you? I'm sorry!
horsepowered: (x6. He smile)

THREADING WITH GENJI AND 76 AND NO ONE TOLD HIM ABOUT OVERWATCH EVER

[personal profile] horsepowered 2018-12-04 01:25 pm (UTC)(link)
[It is a comfort to know that there are friends here that are comfortable with this sort of comfort. Chiron smiles for it, paying no mind to the lack of warmth.

Genji's a thing of medical science, which Chiron's fascinated by, but he's moreso...relieved at it all. Because from all of that, he got a friend. And then...]

....No, I can't say it was ever explained to me.
doublejumps: (pic#12192135)

WHOOPS

[personal profile] doublejumps 2018-12-11 01:41 am (UTC)(link)
[ That had been quite the oversight, hadn't it? Granted, Overwatch has been gone for six years now, and Genji can't say he's surprised to hear that Jack hadn't wanted to tell anyone about it. He's altered his persona from that of the Strike Commander quite drastically. ]

It was a global peacekeeping organization, one that recruited quite a large number of capable scientists and soldiers alike to carry out its mission. In repayment for what they did for me, I worked for them... though I wasn't in the best mental state, during that time.

[ Which references back to his original comment that had led to this explanation. ]
horsepowered: (x6. He smile)

THANKS YOU TWO THANKS!!!

[personal profile] horsepowered 2018-12-11 01:14 pm (UTC)(link)
....Repayment being [Chiron gestures to all of Genji, because he's not an idiot.]

Well. I suppose the question of how Overwatch worked is another story unto itself, and I was only promised yours.
doublejumps: (pic#12192137)

[personal profile] doublejumps 2018-12-15 09:42 pm (UTC)(link)
It would be a long story, and perhaps not mine to tell.

[ Genji had been a member of Blackwatch for most of his time, only switching over toward the end. If anyone should tell Chiron about Overwatch's founding and operations, it should be Jack. But Genji doesn't want to speak out of turn. ]

It was only after I left Overwatch that I learned to accept my new body, and to be at peace with myself. Before then, I think many would tell you I was a terror.

[ He's being a tad self-deprecating, but he does it with an easy smile. ]
horsepowered: (x6. He smile)

[personal profile] horsepowered 2018-12-16 03:06 pm (UTC)(link)
And we only agreed on one regardless.

[Chiron understands. It's why for all the pride he had in his students, he never once would tell their stories in full. Just how they intersected with his own.

Genji's smile is met with a softer, fonder one from Chiron.]

Perhaps. But it's brought you to where you are now, and for whatever it is worth, I'm glad for it.
doublejumps: (pic#12151629)

[personal profile] doublejumps 2018-12-24 03:47 am (UTC)(link)
The journey was necessary. I wouldn't be the person I am today without it.

[ The same can be said for all of them, of course. Every rough patch, every difficult moment, it all (hopefully) leads to being able to better oneself, or at least learn from one's mistakes.

The sun's dipping lower and lower into the sky, and Genji knows that their time is limited. Much as he'd like to stay here and exchange some more stories with Chiron, he suspects both of them have other people they need to find and say goodbye to. ]

I think both of us need to be moving on, but... [ He hops off of his perch on the fence and approaches Chiron, holding his hand out. ] It's been an honor to fight alongside you, friend.
horsepowered: (x3. Gestures at self)

tmw you know this is the logical end point but i miss these two

[personal profile] horsepowered 2018-12-24 02:25 pm (UTC)(link)
[In terms of farewells, the kind that allow for all to be said and cleared before the next stage of life, this is as good as it gets. Chiron knows that fact in his bones, for he has had so many other moments of good byes that denied something this close to perfection.

So there are long shadows to go with a long farewell. That suits.

Genji's hand is taken immediately.]

I could never have asked for anyone better. Be well and safe.
